Fine Gael TD Martin Heydon has welcomed the publication of the main construction contract for Athy’s Southern Distributor Route this week. The contract which could be worth up to €30m will see the final construction of the long awaited ring road for Athy.
“This is a continuation of the real progress we have seen on this project since funds were committed by the Fine Gael led Government in 2014. Since the funds were committed all reports and preparatory works have now been completed to allow the main contract to proceed.
“The completion of this project has been a key priority for me and Fine Gael since my election in 2011 and I see this as the main step towards the completion on the road with diggers expected to be on site later this year.
“The tender detail specifies a contract for construction of a 3.4km single carriageway with shared cycleways, public lighting, drainage, signalised junctions, new roundabout, new railway bridge, landscaping, earthworks, safety barriers and pavements.
