Fine Gael Kildare South TD and Minister Martin Heydon said “I am delighted, after a long battle, to receive confirmation today of the approval of funding for the Amyloidosis drug, Patisiran (Onpattro®️) for patients living in the Republic of Ireland.”

As part of the National Service Plan 2021 and budgetary process, Government allocated the HSE a significantly enhanced budget of €50m for new medicines in 2021. Funding of Patisiran will be from this allocation.

Following a HSE review, the Drugs Group recommended hospital pricing approval of Patisiran (Onpattro®️) indicated for the treatment of hereditary transthyretin-mediated amyloidosis (hATTR amyloidosis) in adult patients with stage 1 or state 2 polyneuropathy.

“Having strongly advocated on behalf of Kildare man Pat Tinsley for this drug to be made available to all Irish patients, I’m delighted for Pat and his family and also for all patients throughout Ireland who have been waiting for approval of this drug.”

I will continue to work with Pat to ensure the necessary procedures to implement this programme of reimbursement is put in place by the HSE without delay and hopefully today’s approval will give some easement of mind to those suffering from the condition Minister Heydon said.
