Fine Gael TD for Kildare South, Martin Heydon, has today (Saturday) reassured worried customers of the Newbridge Credit Union that it's business as usual today and that there is no need to worry about their savings, following the appointment by the Central Bank of a special manager to the branch.

“I’ve spoken to a number of worried customers today who have gone to the credit union to enquire about their savings. Naturally, they are very concerned about yesterday’s announcement of the appointment of a special manager, but I have spoken to the Minister for Finance, Michael Noonan, who has advised that the appointment of a special manager is a necessary measure and was taken in the best interests of Newbridge Credit Union.

“Customers can still access their savings and repay the loans they have with the credit union as normal. The Newbridge Credit Union has a great track record of looking after its 35,000 customers and has an excellent team of staff who are on hand to handle any queries customers may have.”

Newbridge Credit Union to Continue to Operate as Normal - HEYDON

High Court agrees to appointment of a Special Manager

Fine Gael TD for Kildare South Martin Heydon has today sought to assure members of Newbridge Credit Union that the day to day operation of the Credit Union will continue as normal, as the High Court has this evening agreed to a request from the Central Bank for the appointment of a special manager to the Credit Union.

Deputy Heydon “I would like to reassure the 35,000 members of Newbridge Credit Union that the announcement this evening will not effect staff or members who can continue to access their funds and pay off their loans as normal”.

“The Government are fully committed to the National Credit Union Movement and stand full square behind the members of Newbridge Credit Union and the wider national membership.”

“This move today by the Central Bank, with the knowledge of the Minister for Finance is as a result of new legislation brought in in October and rather than raising concerns, this appointment should reassure members of the public that the proper regulatory systems are in place and working.”

Heydon slams unions for failing to agree qualifying period for Agency Workers Directive

Deadline for implementation imminent with no agreement in place

Fine Gael TD for Kildare South, Martin Heydon, has today (Thursday) called for trade unions to stop being reckless and agree a qualifying period to the EU Temporary Agency Workers Directive.

Speaking in the Dáil yesterday, Deputy Heydon said: ‘The trade union movement is playing Russian roulette with businesses and jobs in this country by failing to agree a qualifying period before the Directive comes into effect. This is currently one of the biggest issues facing Irish businesses and there is a real lack of clarity on the detail that will have a significant impact on them.

“The EU Temporary Agency Workers Directive gives agency staff the same benefits as directly employed full time staff from their first day of employment, unless a qualifying period can be agreed by the social partners. This directive is due to be transposed into Irish law next Monday, December 5th. The directive came into law in Britain on October 1st, where a 12 week qualifying period or derogation was agreed.

“The implementation of this EU directive in its current format will put many agency jobs at risk, as some employers require the flexibility of agency staff for seasonal work. The State is the biggest employer of agency staff, including the health service which uses agency staff as a mechanism for dealing with the moratorium on recruitment of staff. It has been reported that this directive could potentially cost the HSE an additional €33m if implemented in its present form.

Closure of Army Barracks should help to ensure Defence Force Numbers are Maintained

Fine Gael TD for Kildare South Martin Heydon has today expressed his hope that the consolidation of Army Barracks confirmed this week will maximize the effectiveness of the Defence Forces and help to ensure that the force can remain at a strength of 9,500.

“The closure of barracks in Cavan, Mullingar, Clonmel and Castlebar is a key step in the ongoing Defence modernisation programme and has been recommended in many reports over the last number of years” Heydon stated.

The barracks are expected to be closed by 30th March 2012.  Over 500 personnel in the barracks will be re-deployed to alternative locations, including the Curragh.  “The location of army personnel in many different locations has given rise to difficulties in the provision of essential training, particularly exercises involving large numbers of personnel, as well as increasing costs.  In these difficult times, the closures announced will enhance the flexibility available to the Defence Forces in the use of their resources, both human and financial” stated Heydon.

TD Martin Heydon on his first five months

It's just five months since local man Martin Heydon was elected to Dail Eireann (above) on his first outing, and after a very short time in politics.

As he and his colleagues closed down the Dail for the summer recess, in a Radio Diary interview Brian Byrne asked the Fine Gael TD what these first months have been like.
