Today (Friday) sees the start of a week of commemorations of activities in 1916 in Athy. Details of all events are included in the attached leaflet.
If you are free this Saturday comes into Athy where around Athy Heritage Centre Museum & Emily Square there will be whole series of family friendly activities to remember 1916.
Just a taste of what is happening:
We will have re-enactors in the square the Lord Edward’s Own & others .. Irish volunteers, RIC, Cumann na mBan, the Fenians, civilians… full scale working replica of the Sliabh na mBan arguable Ireland’s most famous car. 1916 games demonstration, Period military displays,
1916 Children’s fancy dress disco & Family day CI bar,1916 period transport -high Nellie’s, vintage cars, Model/Diorama display including Circus, toys, & memorabilia.
Museum exhibition including big house scene, press of the time, Period memorabilia displays.
Graveyard guided walking tour. Town guided walking tour.
Lecture. 1916 genealogy. Story telling.
Fishing demonstration, river events, etc.,
Music and much more
The square will have the appearance of the old tenement streets as was the case in 1916 …
Mrs Duthie jewellery shop is opening especial for the day to allow people to view a shop of the period.
An event not to be missed and if you really want to get involved we are invited you to come in costume if possible.
