Kildare South Fine Gael TD Martin Heydon has said that 73 Kildare Sports Clubs are to receive €2,803,304 in Sports Capital Grants. The details were confirmed to him today (Thursday) by Minister of State with responsibility for Sport Brendan Griffin.
The allocation to these Kildare clubs is part of the national scheme where almost €56m has been allocated to 1,700 clubs all around the Country. This announcement is a great boost to the 73 clubs in Co. Kildare who have big plans to improve their facilities for the benefit of local communities the length and breadth of Co. Kildare.
“There was an unprecedented number of applications this year with 2,320 sports clubs applying for almost €155m in grants. Initially the funding allocated to the programme was €30m but due to the large demand, both Minister Brendan Griffin and Minister Shane Ross fought for additional funding in the budget which increased the total amount available to almost €60m. While this process delayed the timing of the final announcements, it has meant that we can improve the allocations and provide clubs with closer to what they applied for.
“Since 1998, €911 million has been spent on vital sporting facilities in large and small communities. It has made a huge difference to sporting organisations in Kildare and around the Country, many of which would be otherwise unable to raise funding for necessary infrastructure. I was delighted when the scheme was reintroduced in 2012, having been scrapped in 2008 when the economic crisis hit. We were also able to introduce a scheme in 2014-15 and we have been able to do so again in 2017.
“I have engaged with many sporting organisations in Kildare South as part of this process and I look forward to assisting them with their ambitious plans that will now be government funded and improve the sporting facilities across Kildare.”
