This week in the Dail, I got the opportunity to raise the need for a clear plan for the future of Portlaoise Regional Hospital.  There has been great concern in both Laois and South Kildare in recent years over the future of the hospital which has been exacerbated by the absence of a clear plan.

First and foremost, we must ensure the safe delivery of services and that all services provided at Portlaoise are of the highest standard.  The Emergency Department, Maternity Unit and Pediatrics Departments are the first point of call for many Laois and South Kildare Residents.

In their updated report in December 2016, HIQA pointed to the need for a strategic plan for the hospital and its future and highlighted issues with understaffing and recruitment of no consultant hospital doctors.  Recent leaked reports have increased concerns locally to those who rely on the services of the hospital.

I highlighted to Minister of State Jim Daly that the people of Laois and South Kildare need and deserve

1  Clarity on the future plans for Portlaoise Regional Hospital;

2  The safe provision of Health care services in our area, and

3. Plans for delivery of increased investment to ensure the safe provision of emergency and maternity services for the people of the area.

I will continue to campaign and fight to secure this clarity and investment.
