Free GP care has this week been extended to carers in Kildare, Fine Gael TD for Kildare South Martin Heydon has said.

Deputy Heydon confirmed that 14,000 Carers nationally will now receive the Free GP Visit Card.

Deputy Heydon said: “The new Health legislation passed by the Oireachtas earlier this summer means that anyone in receipt of either full or half rate Carer’s Allowance or Carer’s Benefit, will be automatically eligible for a GP service free of charge.

“This is a really important policy change which will benefit many carers in Kildare.

“Applications for the new service are now open. Carers can register for their GP card online on mymedicalcard.ie, or contact my office on 045-487624 or martin.heydon@oir.ie to get a paper registration form.

“Fine Gael in Government is working to ensure that our economic recovery benefits those who need it most. Carers give invaluable service to this State and so it is really important to provide them with additional supports such as free GP care.

“We know that one of the difficulties for Carers is ensuring that their own health is looked after, both physical and mental health. This new free GP access will ensure Carers are supported in looking after their own health and well-being.”
