In the Dail this week I had the opportunity to raise the concerns of the Equine industry on the potential impacts of Brexit on the movement of horses between Ireland and the UK with Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed.

The Minister assured me that he and his officials are very aware of the concerns and the potential impacts on the movement of all horses in the event of either a no deal or an orderly Brexit. As the Tripartite Agreement is governed by EU rules the UK would cease to be a part of the agreement after Brexit. Extensive discussions on the issue are ongoing including with the EU Commissioner Phil Hogan.

The Minister advised that his Department are seeking clarity on a number of issues and want to ensure the minimum possible disruption to the travel of horses between Ireland and the UK post Brexit.
